With the winter holiday season now in effect and old man winter’s icy blast coming down from the north, thoughts of travelers may be beyond sugar plums and instead towards somewhere warm and tropical.

As you plan ahead for your warm weather vacation in the Mexican Caribbean with your feet in the sand and a drink in your hand, it may be a good time to uncover the best times to head to the travel hotspot of Tulum for your next trip.

If you are looking to travel to Tulum for the best weather, the time to book is now. Travelers are right now in the booking window for the best flights and room availability for February, March and April.

According to Travel + Leisure Magazine, it’s when visitors can enjoy less rain, more sun and tropical weather in the 80s. Sounds pretty good right now right?

The only drawback is everybody wants to be in Tulum during that same time. So, the tradeoff is going to be the crowds fighting for your favorite spot on the beach.

Other experts recommend May before the summer vacation travelers head south. Tourists are more likely to find a mixed bag of weather with more tropical rain and hotter weather in the 90s is part of the travel package.

If you are looking to plan way ahead for next year, November and December are also good months to choose.

How About Lower Prices?

On a budget? Not surprisingly, the balmy tropical summer is the low season in Tulum and offers Mexican Caribbean travelers a budget friendly vacation. However, be prepared for rain, humidity, heat and even a chance for tropical storms and hurricanes.

June through October is budget saving travel season in Tulum. Yes, it rains. It is definitely humid and gets a little toasty. However, my experience is the early part of the day is generally nice with thunderstorms brewing in the afternoon and evening. It’s not as bad as everyone thinks!

Travel + Leisure magazine also says it’s a good time to go luxe in Tulum with off-season steals at some of the high-end all-inclusive resorts in town.

Maybe Seeking Smaller Crowds?

So, you want the beach in Tulum all to yourself. Well, that’s unlikely to happen. However, you can get pretty close in June, September and October. Those typically are the low season months in Tulum.

However, travelers should be aware that June is the official start of hurricane season in Tulum, and it looks like unofficially it has been starting earlier and earlier each year.

Also, October is traditionally the wettest month of the year. That’s why the crowds tend to be smaller.

Avoiding The Seaweed

Ah, yes. The Sargassum seaweed travelers love to hate. It hogs space on the beach and stinks really bad as it rots on the beach. So, it’s probably best for travelers to try to avoid the annoying macroalgae in the sea.

If that is what you are seeking, late November through January is the best time to head to Tulum with the best opportunity to avoid the seaweed.

The good news is even if you visit during seaweed season, there is no need to fear Sargassum. The beach teams in Tulum are pretty good at removing the seaweed so that tourists can truly enjoy their vacation with their feet in the sand and a drink in their hand.
